Magnetic tape was invented here, ditto Post-It notes
Thermostats and Chuck Taylors, spam and supercomputers: all started here. Our roots of American industrial greatness stretch deep: the stories we tell about this place revolve around utility, efficiency and that great midwest aspiration, pragmatism.
Except: we invented skywriting out here in flyover country as well. Ferris wheels, TV remotes and rollerblades. Prince reinvented music in Minneapolis, just like Miles Davis, from Illinois, did before him. Jeanne Gang's charting the future of architecture from her office in Chicago, same as Frank Lloyd Wright did, in Michigan. Bob Dylan broke popular music and then two generations later, so did J Dilla.
The midwest is utility and whimsy, it’s dependable and totally strange.
